Subject: Re: [gislist] Vespucci 2006 summer institute grants announced
Date:  03/07/2006 05:30:01 AM
From:  Michael Gould

Ulrich,

thanks for your interesting (and public) query.

Indeed we would like to have more sponsors providing more grants to more
students hoping to attend the summer institute. Our organizational costs are
rather high (in line with quality) and so our only mechanism for bringing d=
own
attendees' costs is for sponsors to help them with outside grants.

A more general question we have been asking ourselves, over the years, is w=
hy is
it so difficult to obtain EU/ESF grants to match the US NSF grants (12!). T=
he
Euro amount is not high, however the logistics of getting access to these f=
unds
is quite high. Our summer institute is decidely not hands-on training (which
does seem to attract more sponsorship) but rather we focus on the shaping a=
nd
molding of young-career researchers' research agenda (from academia, indust=
ry
or public sector).

Is "Europe" interested in this line of education/training? The propoaganda =
says
yes, however we have yet to see it put "its money where its mouth is".

Solutions coming in FP7? We shall see.

Note: opinion of only one of the many Vespucci founders

cheers,
Michael Gould
