Logan,
There are many options available to tie GPS & GIS together. ArcGIS has
the GPS toolbar which will allow you to link directly to any NEMA
compliant GPS unit through a serial connection. There is also ArcPAD
which allows for field collection and data editing. ArcPAD will connect
to many GPS units.

Trimble has their own extension for ArcGIS called GPS Analyst. It allows
you to bring data directly into your GIS. It is compatible with many
Trimble units. Here is link for more information:
http://www.trimble.com/gpsanalyst.shtml.

This past week while attending ESRI's SERUG conference, I saw a new
product from Leica called MobileMatrix. MobileMatrix allows you to take
your geodatabase into the field and collect data using either GPS or
Total Stations. It is built on ESRI's ArcObjects so it will connect into
any ESRI based GIS. I was very impressed with it's capabilities. It does
have one draw back. It is designed to work primarily with Leica Survey
equipment. It is also not cheap. Here is a link for more information on
this product:

Most all GIS or Survey grade GPS units are able to import or export to a
range of GIS/CAD formats including Shapefiles, DXF, CSV, and others. We
use Trimble's TerraSync and Pathfinder Office with great success. It
does require us to export the collected data to a Shapefile which we
then merge into our Geodatabase but it is not difficult. If you go with
a hand-held data collector (i.e. Recon or Ranger), get one with a real
keyboard. Our field crews are about 15% more efficient when using our
Ranger data collector versus the Recon.

Good day all,

Does anyone have any suggestions on what's the overall best buy or best
brand of on a GPS unit that has the capability of connecting straight
into your GIS.

And I'm also interested in learning more about GPS interoperability
options with Arcview 9.1....does anyone have any sources they would
recommend? Thanks in advance for all the time and help.

Respectfully,

Logan
