Subject: Re: [gislist] GPS nav maps to GIS?

That will depend on if the data that comes with the GPS Nav system is in
a format that is compatible with ArcGIS and not some proprietary format.
ArcGIS will read a wide range of format including Geodatabase,
Shapefiles, Coverages, DWGs, DXFs, DGNs and more. If you add the Data
Interoperability Extension that list gets even larger.

I would check with the manufacturer of the GPS nav system and see what
their data format is. You may also run up against data licensing
agreement issues. The Manufacture may license the data only for use on
their system and it is not allowed to be used in any other application.

Subject: [gislist] GPS nav maps to GIS?

Hi Listers,

Thanks to the several people who replied with info on using GPS data.
But I think I phrased the questions wrong. (see below).

What I really want to know is the possibility of using the roads data
that comes with a GPS navigation software package in my ArcGIS
projects. That is, if I buy a $200 nav package that uses NavTech
roads data, will I be able to use that roads data in ArcGIS? Or any
other software, for instance TeleType roads.

(my current roads dataset is awful)

Thanks for any hints,

Rixanne

Hello Listers,

Maybe this is a dumb question, but. . .

If I buy a GPS navigation software to run on a laptop or PDA (with a
Bluetooth receiver) can I also use that data in ArcGIS?

Can anyone name a nav maps vendor who allows this? Or a conversion
software?

many thanks,

Rixanne
