Subject: Re: [gislist] Which GPS ???

LOL!
You must be oober rich. Our company has a 'state-of-the-art' GPS receiver, =
well, at least I assume it is. It cost =A350k & the test equipment that cam=
e with it (which real-time simulates satellite RF) cost =A3150k! Down side =
is it's not very portable - well, unless you have a military truck with a 2=
30v power supply :-/

Do you mean 'state-of-the-art', or just a really good portable receiver?

:P

I'm sure someone else will ask the basic questions, too, but here's the lis=
t I always ask students who want a state-of-the-art GPS: 1. What do you in=
tend to use it for? Routine walking around, semi-precise data recording, o=
r cadastral equivalent surveying? The receivers, antennas, and integrated =
software are all different, and price goes up as you move up the line here.=
2. Do you want to be able to see results as a standalone unit (handheld) =
or as a data recorder/logger that will feed raw data to another computer/so=
ftware system (like ArcPad, Mapinfo, etc. etc.). 3. How much accuracy do y=
ou need? Decimeter, meter, 10 meters, general neighborhood, etc. =

4. What kinds of conditions will you be working in? Some units do better =
than others at correcting for or ignoring false signals you might get in ur=
ban canyons, under tree cover, or on densely overcast days. 5. What other =
features do you need, want, and dream of?

Once you write down the answers to all those, you can begin some serious sh=
opping!
