Subject: [gislist] Unprojected, flat surface coordinates
Date:  05/22/2006 02:20:02 PM
From:  David T. Hughes

I'm trying to make a working map of a small area. The coordinate system is
planar and in meters and extends from coordinates 20S 5W to 10N 5E (e.g. 30m
long north to south and 10 meters wide east to west.) It is NOT in any
established projected coordinate system. I've tried using ArcGIS 9.1 to
create a coordiante system, but then it insists I list the projection for
the unprojected coordinate system -- and the result comes out to be very
strange indeed. How do I set up such a coordinate system so that when I put
the cursor over a spot on the final map it shows as the recorded
coordinates: e.g. if I hold the cursor over 5S, 1W, the coordinate position
would be -1, -5?

If that makes sense, I would really appreciate an answer. If it does NOT
make sense, I'm willing to walk through what I'm trying to do so that we can
work together on it.

Thanks.
