Subject: Re: [gislist] ESRI shape to MapInfo TAB file convertor
Date:  06/01/2006 09:40:02 AM
From:  David Lamb

When you are importing your polygons into map from the mapinfo file are
you importing the polygons as polygons or are they coming in as
polylines? You need to specify this in your map import. When you
export to the shapefile, make sure you are exporting polylines as
polygons. There is an option on the last tab (in 2006 at least) that
says export closed polylines as polygons. Because if you select to
export a polygonal shapefile, yet are exporting polylines, then there
won't be anything in your shapefile.

When assigning a projection to a shapefile that has been exported from
autocad, I've had better luck exporting it without the projection
information and then reassigning it in ArcCatalog after the export.
Especially with state plane. At least I had that problem with Map 3D
2005.

Hope that helps,

David

Hi Folks..

One more interesting Question to discuss on this intelligent list.

I am basically a MapInfo user, when i create polygons with a lenghty
codes as the attributes.During the migration process using Autocad map
(the latest version to mention).I use map export along the attributes
and other stuff into Esri shape.

When i tend to translate the ESRI shape to MapInfo TAB file..I get only
the attribute data in my table..i can see any graphics at all..i am
following all the process such as assigning projection & other stuffs.

I also think it could be due to lenghty code attribute (Character About
254).As anyone come across such problem.
It works perfect for 90% of the cases i do..i am really unsure what
could be the reason for this back logg?

Can anyone suggest me any free download convertor that can convert ESRI
shapes file to MapInfo TAB file, where in i get both graphics and
attributes.

Advance thanks for all Gigantic GIS experts who are going to remove me
out of this problem

Thanks & Regds
