Subject: Re: [gislist] Inter-census demographic data

Mara:

I would recommend you check out the PopStats data from Synergos Technologies
in Austin, TX. They offer quarterly updates for demographics and are
capturing the trend changes as you are seeking.

I have had Fortune 500 clients in the past (who have used all the other
popular data providers previously) tell me the data was "dead on". As an
example they catch the seasonal population changes for coastal resort
communities and Florida retiree 'Snowbird' migrations.

They do charge a premium, but for your needs it might be worth it. More
info is at http://www.popstats.com. If you are dealing with Spatial
Insights, I believe they are a Synergos partner and can help you with it too
I'm sure.

Good luck with it.

Subject: [gislist] Inter-census demographic data

Good morning,

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on demographic databases
such as Claritas and Spatial Insights. We use a lot of Census-style
data at tract level and smaller. The Census ACS won't have this data
between censuses at such a small level available for several more
years. There are lots of Claritas-style products available but there
is a lot of debate as to how accurate they are and if they should be
used at all. Of particular concern to us is the failure of these data
sets to adjust to trend changes, like spikes in crime or building
booms that reverse population decline, but may not be picked up in
demographic projection.

Any thoughts? Suggestions on a particular brand?
