also if you are using ESRI software there is a class called Intro to Programming ArcObjects with VBA . this course will start with the very basics of programming in arcgis desktop ( mainly arcmap, catalog) the course focuses on understanding the object model diagrams, data creation/access, coding with maps, layers, layouts, symbols this would give you a taste of programming in arcgis environment also i would recommend taking a cheap course on VB at a local community college. although its not gis its still programming and would help you in the long run on a side note, i am surprised about people i know in the GIS community who CAN NOT or WILL NOT program.

Hi All,
I have come to the point in my career where I realize if I want to do anything other than data editing I have to learn GIS programming. I am looking for some advice on where to begin. I have no real programming background and I have found C++ courses difficult because they are never related to spatial applications. I realize I need to get the fundamentals but I was hoping that some where out there is a introductory course or text or tutorial on programming for GIS applications. Any help or tips would be really appreciated. TIA
