All: Does anyone know of a standard method for interpreting the results of SOUNDEX conversions? We are trying to create a Street Name Submission tool that will allow developers to check their proposed street names against active and reserved street names. Ideal results would identify sound-alikes and spelling conflicts, as well as invalid street type designations. The problem is, I cannot find any clarification regarding the comparison of one SOUNDEX to another. I found any number of websites detailing the algorithms for calculating the values, but no clarification on how to use the values once you have them. Example: HARRELL (Soundex = H640) and HARROW (Soundex = H600) are clearly too similar sounding to be allowed. When spoken quickly they sound almost identical. My problem is, how do I compare the SOUNDEX values H640 vs H600 and determine, simply based on the values, that these two street names are too similar. What is the relationship between H640 and H600 in real, defensible terms? Is there a tipping factor that is commonly applied? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
