Travis -
I would suggest you consider the following:
FGDC Metadata (very similar to ISO 19115: Metadata). This is a national and ANSI standard OGC's Web Map Service Interface Specification (implemented in over 1000 applications and products). WMS is also an ISO standard so it is a de-jure standard (by law) Gaining considerable traction is GML (Geography Markup Language) an OGC and soon to be ISO standard. Check out what the FAA is doing with GML as an example. ESRI Shape Files (What is known as a de-facto standard) The various national standards for utilities and public works data. The national standards for expressing survey information. The way in which coordinate reference systems are expressed - the majority of geospatial technology software uses the definitions as defined in the EPSG database, viewed as an normative de-facto standard. And last but not least, the most rapidly implemented new standard (which includes a GML profile), georss (www.georss.org).
Hope this helps Carl Reed, PhD CTO and Executive Director Specification Program OGC
