Diana,
Try downloading the extension "Hawth's Tools". It has a tool to convert points to lines. Works really well.
See: http://www.spatialecology.com/htools/download.php

I'm trying to create a line feature class from a tab-delimited text file that has four columns (id, x, y, and z). Am using ArcInfo. The "Generate" command doesn't work because it can't handle z values. I've now been playing with "Create Features from Text File" in ArcToolbox (under Samples > Data Management > Features), but it returns a null (empty) shapefile. Although my data are really only for *one* big line, I've already tried breaking it down into sections, etc., as in the examples. But neither way works. Any ideas on what I should try next?
Diana
