Subject: [gislist] [SUM] Hidrography data source
Date:  07/27/2006 02:15:00 AM
From:  Dan CRACIUN

Thanks to all who answered.

Mara Kaminowitz:

"What about the template data that comes with ArcView? You might be
able to download it for free if you don't have it. That has some
basic world-wide files, like major rivers and lakes."

The world-wide files that come with ArcView have exactly 98 rivers (for
Europe for ex it has Danube and Rhine).
OTOH, the Major Rivers from Europe dataset are almost exactly what I
need (with a little work in merging-renaming-adding afluents) with a
single problem: it's a polygon feature, not line. I know how to
transform polygon to lines, but in this case I'm going to need the line
that passes through the middle of the polygon. Any ideas how to do that?

Gregory Yetman:

"You could try the Hydro 1k rivers (calculated based on drainage rather
than named). I think that they have stream order, which you can use to
set up display at varying scales.

http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation/gtopo30/hydro/index.html"

I need the name attribute. I need to be able to select the Danube, for
ex, and say: look, kids, the Danube is that little red (or green or
blue) line. It starts from the Black Forest Mountains, it passes through
the following countries... and it ends in the Black Sea, after it splits
into 3 arms and forms a delta.

Nica Constantin:

"Hello ,
Try to find something at
http://geoengine.nga.mil/geospatial/SW_TOOLS/NIMAMUSE/webinter/rast_roam.html
There is a vmap0 database which could be interesting for you"

Is that different from the standard vmap0 database? The filesizes look
the same.

Julie Horns:

"We have a wide range of hydrographic data and nautical charts. Please
let us know if we can help you out at all."

This is for a friend of mine that teaches geography so I'd rather use
free sources. Though I wouldn't mind paying a bit for a data source that
fits exactly my requirements.

Best regards,
Dan Craciun
