I was able to gain assistance and solve my previous post (see below).

I am merging about 100 shapefiles and want to have a column in the final product that maintains the name of the original shapefile.
How do I do this without actually typing in the name pre-merge?
I would need step by step explanation if I need to use code.
I am running ArcView 9.1 with no extensions.
