Thanks to both Peter Jonas and Richard Caldwell for helping me understand that changes to the data source will reflect in all maps using it, but changes to the layer definition (.lyr) will have to be refreshed in all maps manually.
I love this list, rixanne

Rixanne... My understanding (and experience) is that edits to the data file itself will be reflected in the LYR since it really functions as a link to the data file. However, other changes to the display properties , such as symbology, etc would need to be saved over the previous LYR. Consequently those types of changes would only be reflected in the LYR by reloading the edited LYR in every location where it was previously loaded.
Hope this helps... Peter

***************
its the difference between a Data File and a Layer File
this is the note in the arcmap help under "adding a layer"
-When you add a "predefined layer" to your map from ArcCatalog, a copy is placed on the current map. Your current map will not change if the original layer is modified.-
a layer is created in a arcgis map when you add data to it. parcels.shp is considered and data file. when you add data to arcgis map a layer that shows that data is created.
so lets say you modify the way the layer shows the data. for example you create a filter to show only vacant lots based on a data field that may exist.
you can now save that "layer" that you configured to a directory that is now a "defined layer".
The help note, refers to the fact that the layer definition (what data source, filter, colors sizes and shapes to view you data with) when saved as a layer file is a snap shot of how you want to view your data. and changing the saved layer file will not change those layers you already created in however many maps you may have added the layer file to.
does that help?

Hello Listers,
I'm unclear on the concept here. Hope you can help.
new to ArcGIS 9.x. Up from AV 3.2.
If I add a .lyr from ArcCatalog the book says "Any subsequent edits made to the layer on disk will not be reflected on this map."
Does this mean changes to the data source or the .lyr?
what if I DO WANT changes to the data source to be reflected on the map. Should I not use .lyrs?
What if I WANT changes to the .lyr file to be reflected in this and 15 other maps? Do I have to unload and reload all 15 occurances?
I have 15 maps that all use the same data source. i want to update it and have those changes update on all the maps. what is the best way to do this?
many thanks,
Rixanne
