Hello Listers: Thanks to everyone that responded to my question. What a great community!! I've summarized the responses below. I have two zip files that were generously offered by Jamie Whitters (Tree Print utility) and Brad Zaba (DataCatalog utility). Rather than send the zip files to everyone on the list, I'll only send it to those that are interested. The karenware.com site suggested by Joe Luchette looks like a very helpful site with a number of useful Win OS utilities. Happy Holidays and may the New Year be better than the last. Cheers, -Eric Sandoval SUMMARY.......original question posted below try this, dir /b /s *.tif > filelist.txt Chad Nielsen ***************************************************** there are many free directory printers available on the web that are very simple to use. i use Karen's Directory Printer - www.karenware.com, it has many options for the type of info you want to know about (files sizes, created dates, etc., ) hope this helps Joe Luchette, GIS Specialist ***************************************************** Hi Eric, Try this: dir *.* /s /b This will list all files in all subdirectories with the full path name. It's not quite in the format you wanted, but you get the full path and file name. mike Michael A. Carson GIS Coordinator City of Santa Monica ***************************************************** Eric, I downloaded an excel template from arcscripts that does a great job at this. Go to arcscripts and search for DataCatalog. Brad ***************************************************** Use the "bare format" switch, e.g.: dir /b /s *.tif >> c:ilelist.txt Also take a look at: help dir **************************************************** Since you have excel, there are utilities that will generate a spreadsheet of all files inside a selected folder. Here is one that I found on cnet doing a quick search. http://www.download.com/Directory-File-Listing-Utility-for-Microsoft-Exc el/3000-2248_4-10474358.html?tag=lst-0-1 David **************************************************** Hi Eric: I use something called TREE PRINT, which works through Windows Explorer. I've attached the zip file. All the best, Jamie Whitters Planning Department Cape Breton Regional Municipality Sydney, N.S. Canada ***************************************************** you could also download a windos version of the unix find commmand. typing find > your_file.txt will get you a very plain listing, with slashes as separators. you will still need some postprocessing - but it is quite neat.

Hello Listers:
I have a question regarding data management. I would like to generate a list of all my GIS data files, basically the 'file name" and "path." For example: aerial_photo2005.tif C:\GISDataImagery.
I've generated a list from the DOS "dir /s >> c:ilelist.txt" command, but the result is a text file that needs quite a bit of clean up. I have multiple folders and subfolders.
Has anyone else done something like this and is there a simple solution? I'm not a programmer and won't be able to develop a script on my own.
Oh.....I tried cleaning the text file in Excel, but it exceeds the row limitation.
Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
-Eric
