That's true if you're not moving it very far, but if you're moving it a
fair distance away from the original position, this isn't a problem. The
snapping tolerance can be set in the Editing Options to reduce the
snapping radius, if this is a problem. Zooming in tighter will also help
with this, because the difference between the scale of snapping and the
scale of editing (i.e., the distance the vertex is being moved) becomes
greater. Basically, one needs to be moving the vertex farther than the
snapping distance.

If you have the snapping on the vertex will want to snap to its original
position and remain unmovable until you deactivate the snapping.

Since I sent a note to Rixanne with nearly-opposite advice, I wanted to
check this against the wisdom of the group.
If Rixanne is having trouble selecting a vertex, wouldn't she want to have
the snapping on for the vertex? I could see that maybe she wouldn't want
the snapping on for the edge, but to me, the easiest way to grab a vertex
is to have the snapping on. Just curious if I'm missing something.

Try double clicking the line to expose all of the nodes and make sure
your snapping feature is off.

Hi Listers,
I'm having a heck of a time learning how to do simple editing in ArcGIS
9.1. When trying to correct a line, such as to match a road, I have
trouble grabbing just one vertex. If I shake just a tiny bit, the cursor
arrow selects the whole line and moves it as a piece. then you have to
wait for the redraw and move it back. then back to the vertex, !same
problem!. It's driving me crazy!
Plus the Task keeps shafting back to Create New Feature instead of
Modify Feature. How can I keep it on Modify while working with a line
with 20-30 points to move?
any hints are extremely welcome.
