Subject: Re: [gislist] topic change - morals article
Date:  01/12/2007 10:35:00 AM
From:  David Lamb

I was pretty certain the GIS list would solve the problem of ethics :).

You bring up a good point. There is a lot of overlap between GIS ethics
and business ethics in general. I wonder if we can break it down into
societal morals, the morals/ethics that would motivate us because of a
societal pressure, and personal morals/ethics. If the gerrymandering is
in favor of one's political persuasion, then personal and societal
morals might be pushed aside...Also, the incentive not to lose a job
seems to be a good motivator to put aside personal ethics...

Thanks,
David

I'm sure GIS plays a role in this. In a

level?

I think a lot of people in a lot of fields have this problem. It
manifests itself in so many ways - anytime someone sees something at
work they percieve to be ethically wrong. An assignment with negative
consequences, labor violations, the knowledge that your company can't
deliver what it promises. In the case of gerrymandering, I am sure
there are people who will argue that it is both ethical and helpful for
the situation at hand. It is a much thornier question when no actual
laws were broken.

If I am opposed to War, it is ethical of me to go work for Raytheon?
As an imagery analyst? As a receptionist? Am I then obligated to
become the internal watchdog? Or, having known what I was getting into,
am I ethically responsible to give my employer their money's
worth? And what is my ethical responsiblity towards feeding my
family vs. risking my job in the name of a greater good?

Geez I hope you weren't hoping for actual ANSWERS to your questions. :)
