Without any details about the TIFF files it is hard to comment on what might be wrong. If you wish to followup this issue, I would suggest running the "tiffinfo.exe" and "listgeo.exe" utilities against the file and capturing the results for list members to see. These utilities can be used from the FWTools Shell from the free FWTools suite.

There is a variety of information on the geotiff tags used to extend the TIFF format with georeferencing and coordinate system information at:

Note a world file does not contain coordinate system information, only the transformation to map from pixel/line to projected coordinates. GeoTIFF goes beyond this to allow the projected (or geographic) coordinate system to be described.
