Subject: Re: [gislist] kids and mapping
Date:  01/12/2007 01:05:00 PM
From:  Trish Long

Yes, placenames are fascinating too. I know a guy at MIT is studying this,
using examples of placenames in China from ancient to modern times. I can't
recall his name at the moment, but I saw one of his presentations a couple
of years ago and found it very interesting.

As far as the people I know who are uncomfortable with maps, I'd agree that
they are map illiterate.

One person I put in that category is my own mother. She's 70 years old, and
I've never seen her use a road map. This is not to say she does not know her
world geography. She grew up in Ireland. I attribute her knowledge of the
world to her European upbringing. But in terms of driving around in this
country, she has always seemed to rely entirely on others for directions.

When I was a kid, I remember going on vacation with my parents and siblings.
My dad would make sure all the kids had a chance to use the map to see where
we were headed. Now that I think about this, I realize Mom never took a shot
at using the map!

I like to look at world maps from kids from around the world. They
produce such unique maps. It's also interesting to see how the place
name varies depending on where the children are from (Israel/Palestine,
Kashmir/India/Pakistan). Why Geography Matters dedicates a chapter to
place names and their importance.

Perhaps those people aren't just uncomfortable with maps, but are map
illiterate -

Nonie - Thanks for sharing that children's map link.

I enjoy talking to kids about their concepts of their neighborhood,
where they live, and its relationship to the world. I haven't yet
figured out at what age children generally come to an understanding of
place. But for some kids it seems quite early and I am often impressed
with their navigation skills. I suppose somebody is researching this
very thing.

As someone who does not have a very good sense of direction, I am
fascinated by the ways people find their way around. Many people find it
funny that I make maps for a living. The way I think about it, my poor
sense of direction means I really need to rely on maps. I am always
amazed to meet people who are uncomfortable using maps for navigation at
all.

Just my contribution for the day.

Trish

I just LOVE looking at maps that children make!

Look at the photos I took from the ESRI convention in 2005:
