Subject: Re: [gislist] FW: kids and mapping

It makes me wonder if one is living in Australia, would one be more
inclined to put a south arrow on a map?

Ancient Chinese used south arrows because the south was the sun, the source
of life, fair winds and goodness.

People in Confederate States (US) use South as the prime direction. Even the
statues face south.

Christopher Robin and Winnie used the East Pole, or at least set out to
discover it.

Many cultures insist on the main door to the house face sunrise.

In some places, wind direction or ocean current is used as the prime
direction.

The question to be answered by the prime direction is where is zero. Where
do you start?

The dumb end of the tape may not be so dumb after all.

Have you a story about being confused by assuming one reference system when
actually another was used?

Magnetic for true, for example? Or applying the correction backward? CADET,
Compass add east true got changed to subtracting?

There are two types of people that have made these types of errors. Those
that admit it and those that lie about it. More of those that have admitted
mistakes are alive to tell their stories.
