As with most things it depends on the type of work you are doing. There are something's that you do need to consider though regardless. First is you need a good graphics card. GIS is very graphic intensive. A cheap video card can really slow things down. I have heard good things about the Quadro FX 4400. More RAM is always better. I currently run at least 2 GB of ram in all our main production machines. Putting your swap file on a fast hard drive also helps. As to processors, it have been my experience the multiple or duocore do not offer great increases in performance unless you run multiple applications at one time. We are often running ArcGIS, Autodesk Map, and ErMapper at the same time so multiple processors have helped us.

Hello,
What type of windows workstation would you all recommend for a stable GIS editing environment. We use ESRI products. How much ram, type of processor, brand of computer etc... is reasonable. Right now we use and IBM running Windows XP with a 2.3 GH processor and I think 1 GB RAM, but it seems to bog down easily.
