ESRI has standardized on Python as their primary scripting language so if you plan to mainly work in the ESRI world then Python makes good sense. However you can also use Java and VB script. If you already have some VB knowledge then learning VB script might be a good choice.

Hi listers,
I want to pick up a script/computer language for working in ArcMap, for career enhancement purposes. I am a lousy coder and I know this can be a hindrance in finding jobs. But I can pick up the basics and I'd like to be able to at least develop and work with simple apps. What language do you recommend? I want something that has a good chance of still being widely used 2 years from now, so I don't waste effort on learning something noone needs. I know VB and python are widely used. Anything else? What would you recommend? Is there a particular book or tutorial you would recommend for your choice of languages?
