Check out "Dive Into Python" - free online
(http://www.diveintopython.org/). Python also enables you to develop
outside the ESRI or Windows environment. I use Python on Linux to
interact with other open GIS applications (GDAL/OGR, MapServer, etc) and
open source geodatabases (Postgres + PostGIS). Python can also help
with web development/mapping (via the ever more popular Plone CMS).
Though I also use PHP for web map development with MapServer- it is also
fairly widespread and easy to learn...
