Hello GISers,
I'm looking for feedback on how government agencies, especially small cities, deal with GIS training.
If you work for a government agency or similar organization, and you have a few spare moments, please tell me the following:
1) Where does GIS "live" in your organizational structure? (e.g. Is GIS is a division of your IT Dept? Do you have a separate GIS Department? Or do you have GIS users distributed or concentrated in various departments of your organization?)
2) Is GIS training done in-house using existing GIS and IT staff? Or, are GIS consultants used for training staff?
3) If your organization does in-house training, how have the results turned out? Do you find the newly trained staff are producing their own maps and doing their own GIS analyses?
4) Any other thoughts you want to share. Thanks!
I am the primary GIS user for a Planning Division. Just trying to figure out how other agencies get their GIS work done.
Please send your responses to me at tlong@trentonnj.org
