Hi,
Missed this post the first time around, just noticed it on Joe's reply.
There are utilities from Oracle that allow you to load shapefiles directly, see:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/spatial/index.html
Scroll down to find the shapefile loader utilities (shp2sdo). I've used the Java version before with no problems, though you have to work through the documentation linked on the page above to get the syntax just right.
If you have GeoMedia it will load into Oracle directly as well.
