Subject: [gislist] SUM: Geospatial training needs in conservation
Date:  03/09/2007 02:05:00 PM
From:  Ned Horning

First I wanted to thank everyone who responded with input about new courses
you would like to see offered by American Museum of Natural History's Center
for Biodiversity and Conservation. The response was too great to synthesize
all the comments but I wanted to briefly summarize the topics that generated
the most interest.

Although there was broad interest for courses, the most popular ones were:
active remote sensing (radar and lidar), protected area planning/reserve
design, and monitoring tools and methods. There was also significant
interest in providing open source software versions of courses and courses
focused on scripting that could be applied to a number of different software
programs.

Now comes the tough job or prioritizing these themes based on interest, and
feasibility for us to create quality courses. As part of this process we
will look into the possibility of collaborating with other organizations to
complement our own expertise. We will also be exploring distance learning
alternatives to make our courses more accessible. New courses will be
announced as they become available.

If you have further comments or contributions please send them to me
(horning@amnh.org).

All the best,

Ned
