Subject: Re: [gislist] gislist Digest, Vol 44, Issue 18
Date:  03/30/2007 06:55:01 AM
From:  Mark de Blois

Hi Gillian,

Generate and ungenerate is great for those who can afford to have
ArcInfo on their desktops. For those who have ArcView 9.x, there are
good free solutions too I believe.
I have successfully used the Exchanger toolbox containing 2 python
scripts: shp2exch.py and exch2shp.py. These scripts do a similar thing
to a generate/ungenerate and might just be what you need. Details can be
found on the Mapzlibrarian blog
(http://mapzlibrarian.blogspot.com/search/label/python), look for
'Python Script: Shape to Text to Shape'.

If you want to use the gen format, it should be possible too with freely
available tools.
A quick google gave a few hits (also ArcView 3.x scripts) including:
shp2gen
(http://www.koders.com/python/fid17D241831B4ECF7595E8C3A1803BDEC0AE3DDBC6.aspx)

I haven't used this script but have successfully used the gen2shp (the
other way round):
gen2shp (http://www.intevation.de/~jan/gen2shp)

Not sure about ArcView 3.x, haven't touched that in years :-)

Good luck!

cheers,
Mark
