Hello List,
Is there any engineering organization out there that receives AutoCAD drawings as a source, adds their own design, manages the construction of the design and ultimately maintains the assets within their GIS?
We use AutoCAD and ESRI ArcMap 9.1 but to this day I have unsuccessfully streamlined our workflow processes from engineering design onward.
I have tried everything from M&M ArcFM designer, designing in ArcMap from the get go with outstanding versions, using workflow tools, using project management tools, etc...
My major obstacles are: My engineers don't like designing in ArcMap, it is slow and cumbersome for them. ArcMap is very network heavy and in our current environment, any little blip causes our system to crash.
We get our developer drawings in AutoCAD and generally they want them back in that format. We can export or generate prints for them but the extra strokes are not cost efficient.
Our current configuration (biweekly creation of new masters off of default)does not support long transactions with versions outstanding past two weeks. This was done to try and make our data more reliable as we were having issues with outstanding versions and data integrity.
I have yet to successfully figure out the ability to create a cost estimate from a drawing, whether through compatible units or objects linked to an inventory list.
My bandage now is:
Using an online project management software (AceProjects.com) to manage each of our construction projects. At least now I can track the progress and have my GIS editors put the projects into GIS as soon as a design is made. The project is then tracked accordingly throughout its life cycle.
Any feedback or other use cases would be greatly appreciated.
