We are in the process of testing Map 2008 with ArcSDE with versions to see if it will work. Haestad Methods (now Bentley) had a product call GIS Connect that would allow you to connect to and edit ESRI data inside of AutoCAD. It did this by pulling the ArcGIS engine into AutoCAD. Unfortunately it required you to have both AutoCAD and ArcGIS loaded on your machine. I am not sure if Bentley has continued with this product.

Keck & Wood, Inc offers instructor led and virtual training for ESRI's ArcGIS & ArcView software. Please visit www.keckwood.com for more information including a schedule of upcoming classes.

We have tried AutoDesk Map 3D 2007. The issue is that the FDO provider for SDE only connects to default. Version management is privative if non existent. Connecting to multiple DSN does not work. If you are not the version owner you can't connect. In our disturbed environment we can only edit children of a master version of which the master was made from the default version. I have heard the Map 3D 2008 will be a little better. I could not find anyone who successfully implemented this as a solution. I have been trying to speak to the reps at AutoDesk to discuss this and AutoDesk BuzzSaw further.
