Does anybody have experience with decade to decade census comparisons? I am trying to figure out the best way to deal with the changing geographic borders of census tracts. My analysis is from 1980-2000, at the tract level. The only idea that I have is to use the 1980 census tracts for the whole analysis because generally, when the borders are updated, they are not completely rearranged, just divided into multiple pieces. So, I could just average all the demographic data of the 2000 tracts that lie within one particular 1980 tract. Is this the best way to deal with the changing tract boundaries? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
