Subject: Re: [gislist] OBJECT ORIENTED GIS
Date:  06/29/2007 02:17:49 AM
From:  Santiago Martin Alfageme

Thanks a lot, Landon

My Thesis proposal deals with a pure object-oriented model applied to
geological cartography. So graphical aspects are significant. That means
(from a OO perspective) graphical representation beyond point, line and
polygon. =

For example faults in a digitized geological map are composed of several
polylines with (usually) a code number. In Spanish cartography even a single
fault can contain segments with different symbology (i.e.: real fault,
conjectural fault). All these elements belong to a unique entity. Problem:
I would like to identify that single fault at one stroke. From
Entity-Relationship and Field-based systems an option is to develop a query
program based on attributes of new fields (ie. Fault name). =

00 would treat (I, suppose) that as an object of class fault and an ordered
association (OO association) of lines, even with behaviour: drawn as a
polygon at large scale and as a line at little scale. =

There are much more problems to solve. Geodatabase from Esri have been tried
to deal with them but data model is unsatisfactory because in deep is strong
graphical dependent. =

So the big question is: Can I with OpenJUMP design a full data model with
object-oriented foundations and constructs: classes, methods, interfaces,
encapsulation, inheritance, aggregation, association, etc.? =

By the way: in order to understand 00 concepts I am learning Java
programming now. I would be great if I can use OpenJump.

Thanks in advance and I beg your pardon for such a sermon!

Santiago,

Object-Oriented programming is all over the GIS Programming World. I'm not
sure about the details in other programming languages, but I work as a
programmer for the JUMP Pilot Project. The JPP maintains and develops
OpenJUMP, which is an open source GIS program written in Java using only
object-oriented techniques. (You can use OpenJUMP to connect to a RDBMS, but
internally everything is an object.)

I hope that answers your question.

If your looking for an open source object-oriented GIS program to help you
with your thesis OpenJUMP would be a great candidate. Let me know if you
would be interested and we can talk about it some more.

Subject: [gislist] OBJECT ORIENTED GIS

This is my first post in the list:

I am keen on object-oriented model (OO) applied to gis. I would like to
apply the model to geologic cartography. Main reason is a Phd proposal. =

My feeling is that the model is not fully applied on GIS: (i.e.:
geodatabases still are, in deep, graphical-dependent or oracle-spatial is a
mix between relational model and OO).
I haven=B4t tested Smallworld so I can=B4t see the full picture about comme=
rcial
soft. An the other hand there is a lot of free Java programming around
......
but not sure if really develop OO ideas exposed in the well-know Egenhofer
or Worboys works.
=

Consulting bibliography I=B4ve realized that there=B4s a lot in the 90=B4s =
years
(i.e. Monica Wachowicz Phd and published book ) years but odd in recent
times.
Why?. What happens with OO?. Have I missed something?. It=B4s really
out-of-state-of-the-art?
Any information about this thema is wellcome

Thanks in advance =
