Rixanne,
It is telling you the Geodatabase is locked not the Shapefile. Any number of things can cause that depending on what type Geodatabase you are using. If it is a personal or file GDB, then someone else may have it open or editing it. If you are trying to do this in ArcCatalog you can not have it open in ArcMap at the sametime. Those are just a few things to look at.

Hello listers,
When I try to export a certain shapefile to the geodatabase, it fails and I
get this message:
General function failure
Could not update: currently locked by user 'ADMIN' on machine 'DELL9150'.
Failed to execute (FeatureClassToFeatureClass_3).
When I check the various shapefile files with File Explorer (WIN XP) the
file is not checked "read only". Is there another place I should check for a
locked file?
If not, what is going on?
