Hi Rixanne,
I can maybe help get the discussion started.
Now you didn't mention whether you are looking at doing a dual boot with
Boot Camp or using virtualization? This would make some difference in terms
of performance and overall experience.
I have a Black Core Duo Mac Book (smaller screen, older processor, less
video memory and tops out at 2GB of RAM...) and have ran ArcGIS 9.1 on it
myself (company hasn't upgraded to 9.2 long story...) but I am a Windows,
GIS focused, developer and have had very good luck with running Windows XP
using parallels on my Mac Book. With parallels there were some early issues
mostly with peripherals mostly USB issues.
Parallels has been good about new releases addressing these issues and with
their latest release 3.0, USB support has been greatly improved again as
well as hearty improvements to overall host OS integration amongst other
enhancements...
VM ware has also released a virtualization product for Mac, VM Fusion. I
have tried a trial version of that and based on first impression it is a
solid application however they are still behind parallels a bit. The Host
OS integration is the most obvious difference.
I have not ever setup my machine for using Windows via Boot Camp as I want
ready accessibility to the OS X side of things. Parallels does allow you to
run your boot camp Windows install from within OS X as well. I'm not sure
if VM Fusion has this capability or not.
You will have better performance using boot camp as there is no shared
allocation of the machines RAM as OS X would not be running.
Also I know that ArcGIS isn't supported running Vista. I've heard from the
rumor mill that it is possible. But I also here that running Vista thru
virtualization is not really recommended mainly because of Vistas heavy use
of system resources. This is probably not as big of an issue when running
Boot Camp...
I don't use the array of peripherals you mentioned so I can't really comment
on the ability to use those specifically...
The one things I would warn about using a Mac for business is, depending on
your IT support and their attitude towards supporting you on Windows on a
Mac, you may open yourself up to issues getting support as many will look at
it running on a mac as your first problem... Right or wrong, some could use
this as a cop out to giving you proper assistance.
All in all, I LOVE my mac. I'd love a MacBook Pro even more as with the
additional memory both RAM and video memory, and the Core 2 Duo processors:
the newer machines scream! I bought my wife a white MacBook that has the
Core 2 Duo and there was a significant improvement in processing power with
that upgrade.
