Hello Rixanne, I am not sure how ArcGIS 9.2 will run on a MAC OS. I highly recommend that you stay away from VISTA!!!!!!! The VISTA OS is a memory hog and so far it has not lived up to the advertising hype. Stick with Windows XP if you can. I do know that Windows XP is compatable with most of the peripherals that you listed. In fact Dell's ship with a Pocket PC version of windows xp that is almost seamless when syncing with a desktop or laptop with xp.
I personally use a Western Digital USB 80 GB HD as data storage and have not had any problems with ArcGIS 9.2.
Your raster display and 3d rendering speeds will be determined by your processor, memory on the motherboard, and the video card that ships with your computer. My advice is that you invest in the best possible CPU, Video Card, and as much RAM that you can possible afford.
Don't forget that intensive graphic and processing programs (ArcGIS, Photoshop, Pagemaker...) will really eat up battery power. So do not expect to get six hours of operating time from your laptop's batteries when using these programs.
I hope this helps. Sincerely, John

Hello listers,
I'd like to hear from anyone who is running ArcGIS 9.2 in Windows XP or Vista on a MacBook Pro. I need to buy a new laptop and am considering a Macbook Pro. I know it will run the software, but would like to discuss the compatability with peripherals: Dell Axim handheld, Wacom tablet, exterior hard drives, Dimage scanner, Canon printer.
Also speedy raster display, 3d rendering, partitioning the hard drive(s), file management, networking, and satellite internet.
Any takers for this discussion?
Thanks, Rixanne

Hi Rixanne,
I can maybe help get the discussion started.
Now you didn't mention whether you are looking at doing a dual boot with Boot Camp or using virtualization? This would make some difference in terms of performance and overall experience.
I have a Black Core Duo Mac Book (smaller screen, older processor, less video memory and tops out at 2GB of RAM...) and have ran ArcGIS 9.1 on it myself (company hasn't upgraded to 9.2 long story...) but I am a Windows, GIS focused, developer and have had very good luck with running Windows XP using parallels on my Mac Book. With parallels there were some early issues mostly with peripherals mostly USB issues.
Parallels has been good about new releases addressing these issues and with their latest release 3.0, USB support has been greatly improved again as well as hearty improvements to overall host OS integration amongst other enhancements...
VM ware has also released a virtualization product for Mac, VM Fusion. I have tri
