I use a variety of relatively inexpensive GPS receivers this way. For field GIS work I use an older DeLorme BlueLogger bluetooth GPS with an Ipaq HX4700 running ArcPad. Works great. For just getting data I have used a variety of Magellan and Garmin GPS receivers, currently using a DeLorme PN-20 handheld. All have some means to download GPS waypoints to your computer. The best software for converting different receivers data format to XYZ coordinate data, comma delimited, text file for import to a spreadsheet, or directly to SHP or DBF or MIF or other file types is gpsu. A VERY inexpensive shareware program from http://www.gpsu.co.uk They let you read and write almost any type of GPS or GIS point file and translate to some other type: Mapinfo to ArcMap to AutoCad to Spreadsheet to whatever you like. And all that with what appears to be permanent responsive support. I had a problem with my PN-20 when I first got it: no translation software out there. So, I wrote the owner of GPSU and inquired and he rigged me a patch within 48 hours. Dynamite.

Hello,
I would like to purchase either a PDA that has GPS built in or purchase a GPS that would click on to my existing Palm TX. The GPS needs to be WAAS enabled so I can get better accuracy. I would like to be able to capture coordinates standard programs such as a spreadsheet or memo pad. Is this possible without purchasing 3rd party software? If I need software to do this, what is out there? Palm OS or Windows Mobile is fine.
