Subject: [gislist] SUM: CMS recommendations for web GIS integration
Date:  10/11/2007 10:45:00 AM
From:  Jesse Cleary

Hi folks

Glad to get so many response to such an open ended question. Apologies for the delay in my summary.

The take home messages for me are:
-> There is no real clearcut winner yet in the GeoCMS search.
-> Following our expertise (Python over PHP) should be an important consideration.
-> Web GIS options in Plone are in varying states of maturity, but are developing quickly.
-> Engaging project leads in the quest for CMS participation is crucial and obviously not a a GIS
question. This can break the CMS enterprise whether Plone is used or not.
-> Plone covers all of our non-GIS use cases fairly well.

Lot of others interested in the responses so here's a quick summary...

Other CMS's to try:

"Based on our experience and platform preference, choices for us come down to Drupal and Joomla.
Both have huge user bases with numerous modules. Both use PHP and MySQL with Drupal also supporting
Postgres. We are more familiar with PHP than Python (Plone) and any custom apps we build using
Python or other languages (JSP) will probably just be linked from within the CMS site."

Roll your own!

GIS inside Plone:

"Another Product for plone is PleiadesOpenLayers <http://plone.org/products/pleiadesopenlayers>
based on Open Layers <http://openlayers.org/>"

"We've integrated OpenLayers and Plone, which I think more or less deprecates many uses of PrimaGIS
(which will be making more and more use of OpenLayers as well)." <http://pleiades.stoa.org/>

"We are using Primagis to display GIS content for projects (at this stage that feature is under
developement). Primagis is a good solution if you want to visualize complex GIS Data, but it may not
be your first choice fo user generated content."

Advice:

"We have two Plone projects where we have had *great* success - these are the
exceptions, and depend on motivated project leads who are knowledgeable in
the use of the technology, who manage the site(s) and keeps the rest of the
team engaged."

"Perhaps the most important consideration is: what skill sets do your
developers/maintainers have? Do they feel more comfortable scripting in
Python versus Javascript, versus writing Java objects, etc etc? Mapscript
objects (see: http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/docs/reference/mapscript )
using SWIG, are available in a wide range of bindings...Python, PERL, PhP,
Java, Ruby, etc"

"If you absolutely have to develop your web GIS in PHP, you should probably switch to a PHP CMS."
