Gillian,
You might also want to consider FW Tools which comes with a utility
ogr2ogr which can convert MapInfo to shape:
Conversion from MapInfo to ESRI Shape
|ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" mydata.shp mydata.tab|
