With the recent thread regarding "cracked" software, I wanted to open up a discussion regarding this list with respect to moderation and general policies. I'd like to work toward some more formal policies for the list without infringing on the ability to post opinions and thoughts that may not necessarily be agreeable to all. Obviously, there are a lot of different people on this list with many different levels of skill and I think that will always allow for helpful and (at times) very interesting and lively discussions.
First of all, I want to say that I did see the message come through and I specifically waited to gather reaction from list members before I did anything. I do *not* want to turn this list into a completely moderated list. Unfortunately, to stop these messages from ever being posted would require full moderation and I think that would start to overly restrict the general flow of the list and perhaps even hurt the freedom that has been enjoyed by this list. That being said, I have already set this user's access to be moderated and will not allow additional messages coming from this person without verifying that the content is appropriate. Discussions about anything illegal (software piracy and more) will not be tolerated and I'm sure most of the people on this list will agree. Personally I don't mind someone criticizing a message (and the person) and even having a little fun here or there, but at the same time I want to get people's opinions on this. How far do you think we should go to moderate threads such as these and the list in general? What subjects and types of messages do you think should be allowed or disallowed?
For instance, what are your thoughts about any of these:
1) Obvious sales-type messages. For instance, a list poster that's an owner of a software company that replies to each message attempting to sell their particular software product.
2) Obvious marketing or advertising messages. For instance, events (including coursework or seminars) that require a fee to attend, with the intent to freely advertise to the people on the list.
3) Job postings, press releases, or anything else that is posted by a company that is marketing or advertising only for that company and doesn't generally offer any type of real discussion.
Also, I've followed many of the discussions about what specifically this list should discuss. For instance, specific help on products (ESRI or otherwise) - Do you feel this is an appropriate forum? Should this be a list more for general discussions and not specific product support? Would
I've also seen people recommend using Google or some other product to transform a list into something more of a discussion board. How do you feel about discussion boards compared to old-style mailing lists? Do you prefer one over the other? Do you think a discussion board with topics and threads would work better?
I'm open to any ideas and thoughts, so feel free to speak your mind!
Sincerely,
Jaime Bozza MindSites Group, LLC
