I'm more prone to ask basic questions like: What is topology? What are
the differences/ similarities between a GIS and a map? What is LOD, how
does it work? What are address ranges, and how do they relate to
navigation? Tell my why optimization of 3D wire frames is critical for
performance?
Then I sit them down at a machine and ask them to go though a series of
tasks to accomplish a goal. Like: load a project (which contains
vectors with attributes and raster data) and find all the hospitals
closest to 123 Main St. Then calculate the cost to travel from 123 Main
St to the nearest hospital.
I prefer individuals that can do the work correctly and efficiently
first and explain later, at least for a tech.

All-
We're about to hire a GIS Technical Specialist, and given that I have
never been on the interviewer side of the table before, I'm not quite
sure what questions to ask.
So, for those of you who have conducted interviews for GIS positions,
what sort of questions do you typically ask? What are good, open-ended
questions?
And for those recent interviewees, what questions did you get asked, and
what did you think of them? Have suggestions for good/bad approaches to
questions?
And as an aside, the position is up on Monster right now. I'm working
to get it posted on the GeoComm website, but that may take a while.
