Hello everyone, I have just generally been following along on this list. Although once or twice I did respond to help someone out with a problem. Unfortunately, I seemed to have missed the message about the "cracked code". So I will not comment on that.
I do not think that this type of list should allow sales type of messages or direct marketing on the list, since that would just fill the list (and my mailbox up) with spam. I don't see a problem with people saying hey " I have a job opening or what are good interview questions..."
I would like to make a comment about the list being as ESRI tech listing. ESRI, like it or not is a major player in the GIS field. (The ESRI shapefile is a basic compenont for most of the free GIS software) ArcGIS is really the standard software that is used by many GIS specialist. Since ESRI is a major manufacturer, I would expect to see alot of questions on ANY GIS discussion group from people asking for advice on those products.
Yes, I know other products are out there (like AccuGlobe, FGIS, etc.) and if people want to discuss them they can. However, it is up to the users of the discussion group to begine these discussions. Many of you have cried foul, because "everyone" is talking ESRI. How many of you have asked about or made points about the software you use?
In a nutshell, the list should not promote products, or illegal activity, but continue to answer questions about everything GIS related.
John

With the recent thread regarding "cracked" software, I wanted to open up a discussion regarding this list with respect to moderation and general policies. I'd like to work toward some more formal policies for the list without infringing on the ability to post opinions and thoughts that may not necessarily be agreeable to all. Obviously, there are a lot of different people on this list with many different levels of skill and I think that will always allow for helpful and (at times) very interesting and lively discussions.
First of all, I want to say that I did see the message come through and I specifically waited to gather reaction from list members before I did anything. I do *not* want to turn this list into a completely moderated list. Unfortunately, to stop these messages from ever being posted would require full moderation and I think that would start to overly restrict the general flow of the list and perhaps even hurt the freedom that has been enjoyed by this list. That being said, I have already set this user's access to be moderated and will not allow additional messages coming from this person without verifying that the content is appropriate. Discussions about anything illegal (software piracy and more) will not be tolerated and I'm sure most of the people on this list will agree. Personally I don't mind someone criticizing a message (and the person) and even having a little fun here or there, but at the same time I want to get people's opinions on this. How far do you think we should go to moderate threads such as these and the list in general? What subjects and types of messages do you think should be allowed or disallowed?
