I have been a member of the list for several years. I am an ESRI
product user (for 9 years) - I have used other products, but did not
like them. I find out new tips for how to do something once in
awhile. I also try to help others when I can. I don't see why this
should be a problem. Even ESRI specific questions may have wider
appeal since many of the techniques are similar (or at least the
reasoning behind them) to other software packages.
I agree that this should not be a forum for people trying to sell
their stuff (if that is all they are doing). I like an e-mail list
such as this one (rather than a discussion board). ESRI's on-line
support doesn't always have what one is looking for, though they are
pretty good. Why can't we have both? Why are there so many adamant
anti-ESRI folks on the list (at least vocal ones)? I personally like
ESRI products for the most part, though we do find bugs on occasion.
Those of us who are ESRI users could say the same about other
product's users who use this forum (what is so good about Manifold or
MapInfo or similar?) regarding software specific questions. I say,
bring on all questions, within reason. Someone should not be asking
for illegal assistance (cracked software), or trying to sell stuff,
but all other GIS related questions or discussions should be allowed.
