Informix Provides Foundation for Italy's New WAP-Based GIS System; GIS Leader ESRI Italia Unveils GIS Software for Mobile Phone Users
MENLO PARK, Calif. April 3, 2000--Informix(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: IFMX) the technology leader in the software infrastructure for the i.Economy, today announced that ESRI Italia, a market leader in geographical information system (GIS) technology and applications, has introduced its second product based on Informix technology. GeoW@p relies on the wireless application protocol (WAP) and on the Informix Dynamic Server.2000(TM) and shortly on the Informix Internet Foundation.2000(TM) object relational databases. GeoW@p allows cell phone users to access geographic information on their mobile phones via the Internet. This announcement follows on the heels of ESRI Italia's introduction of the company's Informix-based GeoCare(R) call center support application in June 1999.

WAP is positioned at the convergence of two rapidly evolving network technologies; wireless data and the Internet. Both the wireless data market and the Internet are growing rapidly and are reaching new customers. The explosive growth of the Internet has fueled the creation of new and exciting information services.

GeoW@p takes advantage of this scenario by making available location information pertaining to shops and services in cities and territories around the world. With GeoW@p, mobile cell phone users can now access information about specific streets and roads, enabling them to use their WAP-based mobile phones to find their way around town.

"Both GeoW@p and Informix's database management system are specifically designed to manage large quantities of complex data being accessed by a high volume of users," said Gianluca Attura, chief of ESRI Italia's GisTel Division. "The combined architecture and functionality of these technologies gives our customers the performance they need to manage this immense amount of information."

GeoW@p provides users with a rich menu of information to surf, which is shown on the mobile phone's display. Services supplied by GeoW@p might include answers for the closest restaurant, cinema or pharmacy. Further, this information is combined with opening hours; requests for optimal routes to specific location in a town or between two towns; and tourist information about a monument. Every feature uses Informix to provide real-time answers. For instance, a user types in a starting address and a destination. From there, the GeoW@p instantly sends a query to Informix and the result is displayed on the phone's display within a few seconds.

"We are very excited to partner with ESRI Italia in their second Informix-based endeavor," said Steve Weick, senior vice president of Informix's i.Foundation(TM) business group. "As we look to the very near future, our two companies see a multitude of opportunities enabled by the marrying of ESRI Italia's GIS expertise and Informix's market leadership in Internet infrastructure tools and applications. Together, our technologies will continue to provide the mobile consumers and business users with new levels of interaction and information, no matter where they may be."
