Nextcell Introduces the Pocket Spider Wireless Modem and Wireless Portfolio
PLANO, Texas, Apr 19, 2000 - Nextcell, Inc., the wireless data solutions company,
today introduced the Pocket Spider(TM) wireless modem with integrated Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) capabilities
and the Wireless Portfolio. The introduction is part of Microsoft's Pocket PC launch in New York City's Grand Central
Station.
Offering the most powerful, integrated solution for mobile users, Nextcell's Pocket Spider and Wireless Portfolio are
specifically designed to enhance Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) functionality, enabling easy access to the Internet and
other sources of mission critical data. Pocket Spider supports Windows-powered Pocket PC, as well as with other
popular PDA operating systems.
The Pocket Spider is available in two PDA interfaces -- serial or Compaq Flash. The modem weighs only a few ounces,
is smaller than a PDA and is priced at $399 for the base product and $549 with the GPS capability. Based on the same
cellular digital packet data (CDPD) technology as other Nextcell Spider modems and appliances, the Pocket
Spider(TM) offers connection speed of 19.2 Kbps and standard CDPD security features such as network encryption
and error correction for file messaging and transfers.
By simply attaching the compact Pocket Spider module, users add wireless Internet Protocol (IP) to PDA's, enabling
browser-based applications and feature-rich capabilities. Using Pocket Spider, mobile professionals can access the
Internet and other networks and execute most e-commerce and information gathering functions possible on PC's. Pocket
Spider's integrated GPS also makes location identification applications possible, such as field force automation and
automatic vehicle location.
Nextcell's Wireless Portfolio offers wireless IP technology along with an embedded keyboard to be used with a PDA for
streamlined data entry. Encased in an executive-class leather organizer, Wireless Portfolio has all of the accessories a
mobile professional uses today. Wireless Portfolio weighs only a few ounces more than a regular notebook and offers
built-in connectivity. The convenience, scale and simplicity of Wireless Portfolio will encourage mobile professionals to
utilize PDA's with Wireless Portfolio as primary communication and data access appliances.
"The addition of Pocket Spider and Wireless Portfolio to Nextcell's product line of wireless modems and appliances
demonstrates our continued commitment to develop the most powerful, cost-effective and convenient wireless data
solutions for our customers," said Greg Yates, senior vice president of sales and marketing. "Nextcell's mission is to
provide mobility, choice and high quality interactive capabilities to on-the-move professionals who want to remain
connected to all critical sources of interaction and data."
"Corporations consider connection of their mobile professionals to mission critical data, networks and functionality as a
key element in their mobile computing standards," said Rogers Weed, director of marketing for the Mobile Devices
Division at Microsoft Corp. "Nextcell's Pocket Spider and Wireless Portfolio helps address this key enterprise need
which will benefit users by enabling wireless data access to any information, from anywhere, using any device."
