Televigation World's First to Demonstrate Live Real-Time Navigation On Mobile Phones
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 7, 2000--Televigation today announced the world's first real-time navigation system for mobile phones. The company's Snap-to-Map(TM) real-time address locating system makes it possible for wireless operators to provide turn-by-turn directions to the millions of current subscribers with regular mobile phones. Until now, many believed that it was not possible to provide real-time navigation with today's mobile phones.

In recent trials, Televigation demonstrated its Snap-to-Map system, using real-time location data from the U.S. Wireless (NASDAQ: USWC; Frankfurt: USP) RadioCamera(TM) network. Televigation's navigation system supplied automated, turn-by-turn directions to a driver, using a voice interface on a regular wireless phone and using text on a Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) enabled handset. The test was conducted within the U.S. Wireless RadioCamera network in downtown Oakland, California, covering approximately 15 square miles.

"This technology opens up the navigation services market to wireless operators," said Sammy Nassar, vice president of business development for Televigation. "This application is one of the few with such a high market appeal that it can help operators recoup costs and increase air-time."

Brian Cotton, director of consulting, Communications Practice, for Frost & Sullivan, reinforced this perspective, saying, "Wireless location technology is the enabler of the suite of killer applications that will be deployed on mobile networks. Because people change location, the real value of information delivered through their personal communications devices is only realized when the information can be tailored to their physical location. With real-time query and response products like Snap-to-Map, wireless service providers can immediately increase their value proposition to their subscribers, and ultimately reduce churn."

Televigation's technology targets wireless operators, wireless portals, or ASPs that are interested in wireless value-added applications. A recent report by The Strategis Group suggests revenues for value-added location-based services could reach nearly $4 billion per annum by 2004. "The Strategis Group finds that wireless users desire wireless location services such as emergency roadside assistance, traffic, and navigation services even more than wireless Internet services," said Elliott E. Hamilton, director of global wireless, Strategis Group. "Our latest survey of wireless users finds that 65% are interested in turn-by-turn navigation assistance and that they are willing to pay more than $1 for each time they have to use the navigation service."

"By delivering real-time turn-by-turn navigation, Televigation shows how our location platform can now make personal navigation a reality with today's phones," said Jan Klein, vice president of business and market development for U.S. Wireless. "This could significantly expand the market for telematics, as over 100 million wireless subscribers in the US could now become potential telematics customers."

Once implemented, the Televigation real time navigation system will use a voice interface for better convenience and added security while in the car. Here is how a consumer will use the service. First you call the navigation server from your mobile phone and simply speak your destination address. The server returns turn-by-turn directions from your current location by voice. Directions are very specific and even include street names, making them easy to understand and follow. Since location tracking is continuous, the Televigation navigation host updates your directions as your position changes. You can also personalize the system by storing frequently used locations, like your office or home, and quickly ask the system how to get there from your current location. You can also get answers to inquires such as "Where is the nearest gas station?" or "Where can I see the new Hollywood release?" and obtain directions from your exact location.

For consumers, using a mobile phone-based navigation system is much more attractive than buying a car navigation system. For one thing, it works for anyone from the car they currently own. Since it works off a mobile phone, it can be used from any vehicle and in rental cars on trips. It also has the advantage of being on-line and therefore up-to-the-minute with current road construction alerts or even traffic information, unlike static CD-based car systems. Finally, car-centric navigation systems have no capacity to be personalized with frequently used locations like the home or office.

The Televigation Snap-to-Map software includes the algorithms and programs that refine positioning of an individual phone location, interact with users, determine and present navigation directions, and interface to map and address resources. One of the impressive technical features of the software is its capability to refine positioning location information by combining additional inputs like digital-maps, geocoding and speed. Snap-to-Map then transforms a rough position into a precise address, a key to delivering real-time navigation.
