DMTI Spatial Technology Helps To Make Canadian Streets Safer During Holiday
Season
MARKHAM, ON December 07, 2000 - DMTI Spatial is pleased to be partnering
with other high-technology corporate sponsors in Langley and Surrey, B.C.,
to provide the local Operation Red Nose (ORN) volunteer campaign with a
sophisticated system for tracking, routing and communications during the
holiday season.
Each holiday season, thousands of ORN volunteers travel the roads of
Canadian cities in an effort to make them safer. Since the creation of
ORN, fifteen years ago in Quebec City, the program has spread across the
country, and internationally as well. In that time almost one million
drivers, impaired or simply too fatigued to drive alone, have used the free
service for help in getting home safely. And that task just got a whole lot
easier, thanks to the technological capabilities of DMTI Spatial, Entek
Engineering Limited, Sierra Wireless, and Telus Mobility.
DMTI Spatial is supplying digital street-map data to Entek Engineering for
use in portable tracking kits. The kits are placed in the ORN volunteer
vehicle, allowing the ORN dispatcher to track the locations of all their
teams.
Entek Engineering designs and manufactures electronic components and
develops software for use in government, industrial, and commercial
applications. It is providing ORN with the tracking kits that contain its
sophisticated tracking software, mobile display units and technical
support.
Sierra Wireless is a leading wireless data communications equipment
company. The company's contribution to ORN is in the form CDPD cell modems
with GPS. (CDPD is a wireless wide-area data network technology used in
many parts of North America, South America, and Asia).
Another partner in the ORN initiative is Telus Mobility, a subsidiary of
TELUS Corporation, one of Canada's leading telecommunications companies
providing a full range of communications products and services. Its
contributions to ORN are free network airtime for the CDPD modems plus free
cell phones with airtime.
"We believe that the concept and philosophy of ORN complements our efforts
to be a corporate role model for positive community involvement," said John
Fisher, President and CEO of DMTI Spatial. "Our support is helping the ORN
volunteers to ensure that people are not out driving if they've been
drinking."
The company is joining hundreds of other sponsors who also provide goods
and services such as vehicles, fuel, food and refreshments for the ORN
volunteers across Canada. Contributions from DMTI Spatial and others in the
business community represent an estimated annual contribution of almost
three million dollars.
"Together we are making a difference. We're pleased to join with our
business associates and others across Canada to help people arrive home
safely this holiday season," said John Fisher.
