Lockheed Martin Consortium to use Laser-Scan
Technology for NIMA Win
Laser-Scan, International industry leaders in the geospatial solutions
market, have announced their involvement in the Lockheed Martin led
consortium which has been awarded a Phase One contract for NIMA's "Big Idea"
initiative.
NIMA (the U.S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency) issued the Big Idea (BI)
Request for Proposal in May, 2000. A key requirement for the BI is to
provide the infrastructure and functions for NIMA to maintain its geospatial
and image data across its extended enterprise (internal and external
producers, and data providers) in such a way that these data are current,
complete, and accurate. Further, the data must be stored in a way that is
"product independent," or unbiased until the user makes a request for data
against a set of mission parameters.
The initial focus of this project will be to provide for a One-Touch
Maintenance System. Laser-Scan will provide the heart of the proposed
solution through the use of Gothic and LAMPS 2, Laser-Scan's sophisticated
object-oriented geospatial database and data management software,. Taking
commercial off-the-shelf software and integrating with other commercially
available technologies, Laser-Scan will provide the maintenance and data
intensification necessary to ensure accurate and consistent data within the
BI infrastructure.
"This is an incredible opportunity for us to both leverage our existing
systems within NIMA's data production group and to demonstrate the use of
object-oriented data management in a much more corporate wide scale, "
stated Steve Johnson, Laser-Scan's Manager of US Federal Programs. "By
using proven technologies and extensions to existing capabilities, we help
reduce overall risks to the program and hopefully will have a solution that
can be brought to production relatively quickly during future spirals."
Other consortium members include Intergraph Corporation of Huntsville
Alabama, CubeWerx of Hull Canada, and Holonics Data Management of Hull
Canada.
"Our Big Idea team represents the premier companies in this highly
specialized community. They bring unmatched expertise in the specific
domain areas addressed by the Big Idea, and together offer an excellent mix
of skills, knowledge and experience." Said John Zimmerman, Program Manager
for Lockheed Martin.
For more than 30 years, Lockheed Martin Management & Data Systems (M&DS) has
provided systems integration, systems engineering, software development,
program management, and information systems solutions for vital national
