LEICA Introduces Turnkey GPS Sensor For GIS Applications
JULY 31, 2000 -- Leica Geosystems has introduced a new GPS receiver designed to provide a
"plug and play" geolocation solution for GIS data collectors.
The new GS5 is a complete turnkey package that includes a 12-channel GPS
receiver with a built-in differential beacon receiver, as well as
batteries and charger, telescopic antenna pole and durable backpack.
The GS5 calculates the user's position from GPS satellite transmissions,
corrected with differential error corrections from a nearby reference
station, and outputs real-time position measurements accurate to within
2-5 meters. The system interfaces directly with a user's ESRI
ArcPad(tm) Data Collector or any other GIS data acquisition system.
The GS5 provides data outputs in the industry-standard NMEA-0183 Version
2.01 format, including GGA, GSA and GSV sentences, with an update rate
of once per second.
"The GS5 package contains everything needed to gather position data for
GIS applications," stated Stig Pedersen, GIS Business System Manager for
Leica. "The system is easy to deploy and set up in the field. All you
need to do is turn it on, connect to your GIS mapping device and start
gathering data."
The lightweight GPS/GIS smart antenna unit, which mounts on the
telescopic pole, contains the GPS and beacon receivers, sealed in a
UV-stable plastic radome. The antenna unit is 3.5-in (89 mm) high and
5.5 in (139 mm) in diameter, and weighs just 660 grams. The batteries
and charger unit are carried in the backpack.
The system's dual-channel beacon receiver tunes automatically to the
strongest signal from a regional reference station in the U.S. Coast
Guard's nationwide DGPS network. The unit utilizes an H-field beacon
antenna for optimum signal reception and interference rejection.
