CANFOR CORP - Launches Subsidiary to Develop its Genus Resource Management - Technologies
Toronto, Ontario, Jul. 28, 2000 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX) -- Canfor Corporation announced the launch of a technology subsidiary company that will develop Canfor's new Genus resource management technologies.

Genus is a fully integrated resource management system, which offers easy, quick and single-point access to a broad spectrum of land and resource management data.

It responds to three of the toughest challenges facing businesses and organizations involved in land and resource management: increased regulatory requirements, growing pressure for eco-certification and the demand for technological innovation to improve efficiencies and financial performance.

"Building on our technological expertise, an innovative team within Canfor set about to design and implement a forward-thinking solution that has become known as Genus resource management technologies," said David Emerson, Canfor's President and CEO. "The results are clear - the company has achieved significant new cost efficiencies while at the same time greatly improving resource stewardship and regulatory compliance."

Three years in the making, the Genus product family enjoys the enviable position of a proven track record within Canfor and an established customer base with Weyerhaeuser Coastal Operations, the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, and Pope & Talbot, who are already implementing the Genus applications in their own operations.

Through the new subsidiary, the Genus team will take this technology to a new level, creating and marketing applications for a variety of industries with land-based management systems.

"We are within reach of achieving land and resource management standards not thought possible a few years ago, and doing it in a practical, commercially viable way," said Mr. Emerson.

Over the next 18 months, Canfor's new technology subsidiary plans to:
  • seek strategic partnerships and alliances;
  • become a dominant player in the global market for resource management information systems (RMIS);
  • establish itself as an industry leader in providing technical solutions to customers seeking environmental certification; and
  • develop land resource management solutions for other industries, such as oil and gas, mining, airports and municipal/regional planning.

Canfor Corporation is a leading Canadian integrated forest products company based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Canfor creates jobs for 6,550 people - 5,880 directly and 750 through affiliated companies.

Backgrounder - Canfor's vision of innovation With the launch of Genus, Canfor is moving to exploit the considerable knowledge and technology developed in its core business.

Addressing key resource management challenges Genus responds to three of the toughest challenges facing the forest industry as well as other organizations across the global resource and land management spectrum:
  • Increased regulatory requirements;
  • Growing pressure for eco-certification; and
  • Demand for technological innovation to improve efficiencies

and financial performance.

With six million hectares of forests to manage and a daunting regulatory burden, Canfor has come to understand these challenges intimately. Canfor's staff-time spent collecting, analyzing and reporting forestry data had tripled over a three-year period, with costs reaching $14 million annually.

A dedicated technology team within Canfor has found an innovative and forward-thinking answer to these challenges - Genus Resource Management Technologies.

Building from a proven track record The Genus product family has been three years in the making. Today, it has a proven track record of use by Canfor along with customers such as Pope & Talbot, British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Weyerhaeuser Coastal Operations. These customers are serviced by a dedicated project team and support network.

Benefits that improve the bottom line Numerous benefits of this new resource data management system have been realized including:
  • decreasing stumpage costs by over $5 million per year by more accurate reporting;
  • guaranteeing timely and uninterrupted access to timber supply by ensuring that all required documentation to harvest wood is available as required;
  • decreasing logging costs by better planning harvest activities; - reducing the cost of managing forestry information by decreasing the amount of work required to be done in the field;
  • increasing the value of timber resources by having better information on specific species and grade mixes in each division; and,
  • complying more effectively with requirements contained in the Forest Practices Code by providing standard tools and systems.

Quick & easy single-point access: a major competitive advantage With future applications to a wide range of organizations, Genus offers easy, quick and single-point access to a broad spectrum of land and resource management data. With a proven track record, Genus already has a major competitive advantage over other forest resource information systems.

That is why the time has come for Canfor to take Genus Resource Management Technologies to a new level in the marketplace.

The new technology subsidiary company is about achieving global leadership in developing information management systems that help customers adopt sound environmental and commercial practices in managing valuable resources.

Canfor is building on its strengths to embrace a vision of innovation that will make it a global leader among resource companies in the new economy.

Environmental stewardship Environmental stewardship is a responsibility forestry companies take very seriously. A key aspect of this responsibility involves tracking the "chain of custody" or the movement of wood fibre from the forest floor to the customer. The Genus log production application tracks each log and allows forest companies to demonstrate that their wood comes from a sustainably managed forest. This is essential for forest companies who are seeking third-party environmental certification.

Fully integrated, flexible, effortless Genus provides clients with a powerful data platform that currently incorporates the power of Oracle with the functionality of a geographic information system (GIS). As a fully integrated resource management information system, Genus provides simple structure for improved management of resource data. In addition, Genus also provides the tools necessary for comprehensive timberland planning and harvesting strategies.

Genus was developed using a modular structure and is based on state of the art architecture. At present, the system includes eight modules that encompass the entire resource management spectrum. The system is highly flexible and permits new modules to be developed and added with ease.

Building from a successful base The comprehensive Genus package builds on the power of Oracle with an easy-to-use Windows desktop interface. Development tools include Powerbuilder and ESRI's Spatial Database Engine and Map Objects. Genus currently includes eight modules: Road Management; Block Tracking; Incident Tracking; Stumpage; Silviculture; Operational Planning; GIS; and, Map Plotting.

A vision of innovation One of the most appealing benefits of Genus is that its potential applications go well beyond forestry. The base data management system of Genus can be easily and quickly modified for use by other industries. Oil and gas, mining, airports, real estate are just a few of the potential applications for this visionary and innovative new technology solution.
