MicroStation Descartes Helps Pave the Way to 2002 Winter Olympics
June 1, 2000 -Salt Lake City is the largest metropolitan area ever to host the Olympic
and Paralympic Winter Games. However, serious improvements to the city's
infrastructure were needed, particularly in the area of transportation, to support the
expected influx of several hundred thousand people.
One of the most critical transportation projects involves rebuilding the interstate freeway
I-15, a 17.5-mile stretch serving as the major north/south route through Salt Lake City.
Upon examining the freeway's capacity, UDOT determined that repairing the crumbling infrastructure
was not enough. I-15 needed to be torn out, ramps, bridges and all, and replaced from scratch.
The design/build contractor Wasatch Constructors--a joint venture of industry powerhouses Peter Kiewit
Sons, Inc., Granite Construction Company and Morrison Knudsen Corporation--was formed specifically
to complete the I-15 reconstruction project. Wasatch, in turn, contracted a joint venture of Sverdrup Civil,
Inc., and De Leuw, Cather & Company, a subdivision of Parsons Transportation, to design the new
highway.
They decided early on to standardize on Bentley software for the entire I-15 project. MicroStation
Descartes was used to prepare corridor design documents, taking advantage of existing engineering
documents of the original highway design and interim repair, aerial photography and newly surveyed
details of the corridor.
"Parsons works with numerous state department(s) of transportation (DOT) and an extensive array of
other transportation agencies in the United States and throughout the world," says Bill Guthrie, CADD
Production Manager. "The use of Bentley products enables us to coordinate our files, our users and our
clients, as most DOT's now use MicroStation. We have used Bentley products since Bentley first
started developing MicroStation, and we are moving forward with MicroStation/J and the Engineering
Configurations deployment."
Using MicroStation and MicroStation Descartes, the team was able to review and sometimes redesign
the concept geometrics on features of the project. These reviews and redesigns enabled reductions in
grading and earthwork quantities, as well as shortenings of bridge lengths. It also allowed the
implementation of the accelerated design schedule. It saved an estimated $ 1 billion in overall costs on
the operation.
"The general functions of MicroStation that many people take for granted are extremely valuable assets
to our operations," comments Guthrie. "With the advanced reference filing, raster support, workspaces
and other aspects of Bentley software, we saved ten to fifteen percent in both time and money. We've
never done a job of this magnitude with Bentley's competitors."
The full story of the rebuilding of Salt Lake City's I-15 will be featured in the near future on the
Bentley website.
