ArcPad Goes Wireless at 5.0.1

ESRI’s Mobile Mapping and GIS Solution Now Supports Wireless Data Acquisition

Redlands, California - ESRI, the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, today announced that ArcPad software can now download an image or map layer via wireless technology. ArcPad 5.0.1 can act as a client to ArcIMS, ESRI’s Internet mapping and GIS software. Data is downloaded to ArcPad using a TCP/IP connection such as a wireless local area network, cellular phone, or a wireless modem. Features can be readily identified on the image layer.

According to Product Manager Shane Clarke, “The combination of online and existing offline data capabilities makes ArcPad an invaluable tool for users out in the field.”

ArcPad also adds support for a number of global positioning system (GPS) receivers. ArcPad is currently GPS-enabled for use with Trimble, Magellan, and Ashtech brand receivers within the United States. ArcPad can display and automatically save GPS information in ArcPad data files. Other GPS receivers can be used to display GPS information and as a basic navigation tool. Outside the United States, ArcPad is GPS-enabled for all compatible GPS receiver brands. ArcPad supports GPS receivers that output the NMEA or TSIP protocols, in addition to the DeLorme Earthmate receiver.

ArcPad is a GIS and mapping system everyone can use. Potential applications include property damage assessment, habitat studies, military fieldwork, street sign inventory, road pavement management, power pole maintenance, and meter reading.

Availability

ArcPad runs on Windows CE 2.11 or higher, 95/98, NT, and 2000. ArcPad 5.0.1 adds support for the Microsoft Windows-powered Pocket PC. ArcPad software is sold independently of any hardware device. ArcPad 5.0.1 is a free downloadable upgrade for current ArcPad users.
